The set
comprises rostra and 6 trucks. The rostra form the
stern of the ship in act I and provide a raised
platform for the Chapel in act II. The two largest
trucks have rocks on one side and the Chapel on the
other side. The remaining 4 trucks have rocks on one
side and trees on the other.
As can be seen from the photographs, the set is very
stylised but is in keeping with the atmosphere of the
show. The first act has the addition of a cutout
stern, lighthouse, cannon and steps. The show opens
with a large sail hung downstage on which is painted
the title of the show. At the appropriate time in the
overture, the sail disappears up the barrel of the
cannon and the cannon fires with a loud report and
smoke. The Pirate King then swings in on a rope
(supplied by us - the rope that is). This makes for a
very dramatic and spectacular opening.
In act II, the doors of the Chapel are practical and
can be used as an entrance.
Additional side legs will be probably be needed for cover. These are not supplied
but a sky cloth for hanging upstage is.
